NYC Mayor Bloomberg Will Proclaim

July 12th - July 18th Africa Fashion Week

The office of New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg will officially proclaim July 12 thru July 18 as Africa Fashion Week in New York City, a historical endorsement for Africans and African Americans in the fashion/entertainment industry.

Africa Fashion Week NY is a luxurious, multi-day event which includes runway shows, exhibitions, and industry networking events- all with the purpose of raising awareness of the African/ African-American fashion & NYC  Sealentertainment professionals in the New York and Tri -State area.

 

Accordingly, this nationally formed week of diversity centric fashion events will henceforth be celebrated annually from July 12th thru July 18th.

AFWNY Enlists Stylist Gugulethu for Team!

Gugulethu (a.k.a. Gugu ᶫᵒᵛᵉᵧₒᵤ Lethu and Gugu) is a Fashion Stylist/Image and Wardrobe Consultant. She is based in New York City and ventures through out the Tri-State area. This once Fine Arts student and graduate began her journey in 2004 when she traded in her Converse Sneakers for black pumps- a staple for every author of style!

Gugu’s background as an assistant buyer and profiler for various Boutiques has awarded her with an indispensable eye for forecasting emerging trends. Moreover, Gugu’s ability to help men and women dress successfully for both daily wear and special occasions accentuates her styling versatility.

Gugu especially loves the liberty of freelance and the array of tasks it allows her to embark on, whether she is on an edgy high fashion editorial, shopping for a Wall Street client or simply consulting a nervous bride. Styling is the pulse to her life.

Fashionjunkii Joins the AFWNY Team!

 Born in Tanzania, Rosemary Kokuhilwa is a former model, freelance fashion stylist, certified makeup artist, and blogger for fashionjunkii.onsugar.com. Encouraged and supported by her father, Kokuhilwa’s been fascinated by the fashion industry from an early age. Her passion bloomed once she graduated high school and began modeling and working for M-NET Africa-Tanzania. This opportunity allowed her to gain experience by working on a multitude of exciting assignments including road shows for both M-NET Rock Down Africa and M-NET Face of Africa. She also started working as a stylist for local runway shows at this time.

As a stylist, Rosemary made-over private clients with chic looks in addition to updating their wardrobes. Determined to find her niche in the fashion industry in a capacity of her choice, Kokuhilwa migrated to the US and has since started her own very popular fashion blog- aptly name fashionjunkii.onsugar.com.

She has been present and participated in numerous seasons of New York Fashion Week.

Korto Momolu - International Designer and Stylist

Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe - Mo • Mo • Lu) is a popular fashion designer and stylist.  Korto was born in Monrovia, Liberia and lived there until 1990 with her parents and siblings.  They settled in Canada, where Korto pursued her passion and studied fashion design at the L'Academies des Couturiers Design Institute in Ottawa, Ontario.  After graduation, she moved to Arkansas with her husband to live and raise their daughter. Influenced by her African roots and inspired by rich fabrics, Korto began producing chic women's wear and accessories.

After working as an independent fashion designer and continuing her education at the renowned Parsons School of Design, Korto followed her dreams and won a place on the 5th season of Bravo TV's hit show Project Runway.  Throughout the show, Korto stood out as a designer who not only embraced color and diversity, but displayed such extraordinary talent that she was awarded the fan favorite prize. During the season finale of Project Runway, Korto presented her spring 2009 collection at Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week and ultimately ended the season as 1st runner up.
